ninavu 1.3
coverstory
Even if time go by at an alarming speed and we grow older and mind gets written over and
over with new images of everyday existence, we still keep close to our heart some memories
of that unforgettable four years of life. Here's how few of us remember our CET…
CV Gangadharan (1968 Civil)
" During my times, the campus in kulathoor was just starting, the buildings were being built and all. ......

"I can still remember the names of all my teachers.. Ravikumar, Subrahmaniam (2), Rebecca, K. C. Chacko, P.
C. Chacko, Raja, Chandrasekharan…"

I became a Lecturer in EC, Trichur, after college, through PSC. Gross salary less than (definitely not more than)

Rs. 500/- per month
. Cant imagine that now ! :D

When I think of CET, I remember….
(1) Cool breeze sweeping the plopes of the landscape during the pleasant and lively mornings (except the 3
summer months) of the campus and the hostel premises. There used to be a WIND MILL near the water tank of
the hostel.
(2) Casual walks around the campus and the nooks and corners of the neighbouring villages, to understand the
lifestyle of the rural Kulathur, Veli lake, Kazhakkuttam, Thumba rocket launching station fishing villages etc.
(3)and, the
Weekend 16 mm film screenings by the contractor "Kuttappan" on the walls of the
mess hall.

"We used to get kappa and chamanthy once a week. Kappa was grown from the
campus itself. Too good!! "

Campus politics was not heard of in those days. It was the days of radio, and paper. We used to listen to cricket
commendatory on radio.
Listening to Radio Ceylon's Binaca Geeth Mala (by Amin Sayani), Vividh
Bharati's Vishesh Jaymala and the local Akashavani were favourite pastimes.

Attire? Anything, including Mundu and shirt was OK in thosed ays. Laboratories demanded PANT SHIRT attire
for entry inside."

A Aristo Slide Rule was the vogue gadget to own, then!! ;) .

Chemeen was the biggest hit of our times. I had witnessed its shooting in Nattika beach. Yesudas,
Jayachandran, Janaki Amma and Susheela Amma
"rocked " the campus then. So did Rafi and Lata's music.
Radio was our only hope, thou.
"

Muraleedharan Nair KR (1968 Civil)
" The most stylish thing to own during my times were a pair of
Cooling glasses !

PM Lal Bahadur Shastry Visited college during my time, to inaugurate the campus, I think.

CET taught me a lot of things, besides the fundamentals of Engineering, it taught
me how to work in a group.

K. Jayaprakash (1972 civil)
" A sports ground has been added, also the gate towards the main road was added in our times.

College had five year courses and four year courses. Students from these were the main
divisions in the college. There used to be events and college day competitions
between the two.

I remember VK Krishna Menon.(Defence Minister of INDIA) once visiting the campus."

Rajashekhar (1976 Civil)
" I remember Rajans Café in front of college. It was popular then."

Harinarayanan S (1979 Civil)
" Sholay was released during that time. So did Enter the Dragon!

Construction of the library building started during our time.

While canteen used to be my favourite spot , the area between the post office and heat engine lab was
notorious as lovers spot.

Bus was still the favourite and popular modes of travel. Scooters and bikes to the campus used to be rare.

Gundi singh and Chaka raman were the notorious people in campus during my
times!
"

Mary Lourde (1983 Elec)
" sugunarajan, praseedan, pushpakumar, varadaa kumari, dr muraleedharan... I still
remember some of my teachers!!.

I remember the political scene in capmpus being jolly till 80-81.

Being an ENGINEER in those days it was very distinguished profession. Also admirable. Now it has become
very common means of survival
!"

Ananathalakshmi (1983 mech)
"PG Library and the Planetarium were only being constructed during that time.
I visited the campus long after graduation. It was full of trees by then..The main bldg could not be seen
from road , which I didn't like (even though I like nature)
.

We ddidnt have Campus interviews then
.I joined as a management trainee in FACT in 83 for a stipend of
800/- !!

The "maada kadakal" in front of college didnt have names. I Remember jacob's engg on the
way at sreekaryam, though.

The finest lesson I learned in CET was survival of the fittest and the ability talk to to anybody without being gender
conscious...
that boldness. It paid well for my career later.

I remember CET being less political and more friendly during her times."The
Campus politics scene just started during our times" . M/F ratio were hanging
around 1:4 during her times, but the separation wasn't felt after the first years.

While the present generation wears saree only on demo days(pandi day),
Saree and shirt/pants were
the dress code then.

We had slangs, yes.. aliyan for males(male) and "de" (not di!) among females "

B Sureshkumar (1983 Electrical)
" Seniors were very good. Senior-Junior relationships upto1985 was ok. After wards not much relationship
due to lack of ragging.

Top corner classes in the mech and arch corners, civil dept & drawing halls used to be the lovers
spots then.

Male-female ratio bettered to 65-35 then. Any event/sport which girls participated or
came as spectators were "very" popular.

Rivalries with branch were there, though not to a great extend, little here and there.
!"

Sheefa Krishnakumar (1986 Civil)
" Can't think about CET without thinking about the beautiful campus, ladies hostel
and civil dept.

Students groups like ISM & FES were active. I remember the sasthra sahitya parishad also
being active. LH Days, MH Days and college days used to be great.
"

Sreekumar (1987 Civil)
" I feel the campus has become more crowded now, more people and more
buildings,etc. It wasn't that then…
."

Ajith Nair (1988 Civil)
" CET, Academically: There is always a scope for improvement . Syllabus should be re evaluated
regularly

structural analysis was a nightmare!!

Gadgets that were in vogue? I was part of the calculator generation !! "
