IMPORTANT MILESTONES OF COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING 1939 College started with 3 streams - Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering with 21 students per stream in a campus which is presently the office of Post Master General. Name of the degree awarded was B.Sc Engineering. 1958 Started M.Sc Engineering courses in Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering. [ courses - 1. Hydraulics Engineering 2. Structural Engineering 3. Geotechnical Engineering and 4. Electrical Machines] 1961 Shifting of the college into the present college campus 1962 M.Sc Engineering course started under Mechanical Engineering Department. [1. Thermal Science Engineering 2. Machine Design]. 1964 Department of Architecture was started with Part-time Faculty. Two more streams in M.Sc Engineering under Electrical Engineering course started. [1. Control Systems 2. Power Systems]. Department of Electronics and Communication started. 1965 Silver Jubilee Celebration of the College of Engineering. The function was inagurated by the then Prime Minister Late. Sri. Lal Bahadur Shastri. 1967 Department of Architecture expanded with full time faculty. 1969 Part-time undergraduate course for Mechanical Engineering started. 1970 B.Arch Degree instituted for the Architecture Engineering course. 1972 Post Graduate course in Microwave & Television Engineering started under Electronics and Communication Engineering Department. 1974 Part-time undergraduate course in Civil Engineering started. 1975 Part-time undergraduate course in Electrical Engineering started. 1976 M.Sc Engineering in Environmental Engineering started. Course in Architecture Engineering recognized by Indian Institute of Architects. 1977 CETAA constituted and constitution and rules approved in a general body meeting. A testing lab under Electrical Engineering Department which is an approved BIS. Testing center for energy meters as per ISI 3010 for ISI certification started. 1981 Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering started under Department of Electronics. 1982 M.Sc Engineering courses in Propulsion Engineering & Transportation Engineering started. B.Sc Engineering in Industrial Engineering started under Mechanical Engineering Department. Part-time undergraduate course in Electronics and Communication Engineering started. 1984 Centre for Water Resources and Management started. Career Guidance Placement Unit Started. M.Sc Engineering in Guidance and Navigational Control started. Started B.Tech course in Computer Science and Engineering. Started a course in Master of Computer Applications. 1985 Part-time course in Management of Business Administration started. 1986 Post Graduate course in Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering started. Course Degree name B.Sc Engineering changed to B.Tech Degree and M.Sc Engineering to M.Tech Degree. Course name Electrical Engineering changed to Electrical & Electronics Engineering. 1988 Part-time Post Graduate course in Electrical & Electronics Engineering started. Post Graduate course in Architecture Engineering started. Part-time Post Graduate course in Electronics and Communication Engineering and Applied Electronics & Instrumentation started (alternately). Part-time Post Graduate in any one steam of the five streams in Civil Engineering started. [stream choice optionally every year]. Post Graduate course in Industrial Engineering started. 1989 Golden Jubilee Celebration of the College. Part-time Post Graduate course in Electrical & Electronics Engineering started. Post Graduate course in Architecture Engineering started. 1990 Computer Aided and Drafting facility started in Department of Architecture. Part-time Post Graduate course in Mechanical Engineering started. 1991 Implementation of IMPACT Project in Computer Science and Electronics and Communication Departments. 1994 Centre for Computing Facility started. Architecture Department shifted to New Building. 1996 An Extension counter of Sub Treasury Kazhakuttam started in College of Engineering Trivandrum. A one time B.Tech Degree course for Polytechnic teachers started in Department of Civil Engineering. 1997 Sustainability support scheme initiated by Ministry of Information Technology is a continuation IMPACT Project in Department of Computer Science Engineering. 1998 A Continuing Centre for Education (CCE) started in the college. A sub Treasury started functioning in the college. 1999 Part-time under graduate course in Computer Science & Engineering started. A project 'Networking' was sanctioned to Department of Electronics & Communication. Celebration of Diamond Jubilee Year of the college with lot of activities. Under graduate courses in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering were accredited by AICTE; Civil Engineering and Electronics & Communication were awarded A grade and Mechanical Engineering was awarded B grade for 5 years. 2000 Full-time MBA course started 2001 ISO 9002 Certificate for 3 years was awarded to undergraduate courses in Department of Electronics and Communication and Department of Computer Science & Engineering. The undergraduate course in Computer Science & Engineering was accredited by AICTE and awarded 'A' grade for 5 years. Applied Electronics & Instrumentation and Industrial Engineering undergraduate courses were accredited and awarded 'B' grade for 5 years. The Courses: The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, constituted in 1965 offers B. Tech courses in Electronics and Communication Engineering and Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering. The department also runs M. Tech programmes in Microwave & TV Engineering and Applied Electronics & Instrumentation. The department has been accredited by NBA in the year 2000 and it has awarded its highest grade A5 to the department. The ISO 9002 certification awarded to the department is a proof for the maintenance of a Quality system for the Academic programs of the department. Established in 1939, this is the only A5 grade Civil Engineering Department in the State. Availability of trained man power has facilitated the department to play a very important role in the field of consultancy, research, testing, certification and training for the industry. Covering around 5000 square metre of built up area, the department has labs that are equipped with modern equipment. Students graduating from this department have carved out a niche for themselves in reported firms and establishments, the world over. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering began functioning in the college in 1984 and since its inception,graduating students have been well placed in either deemed academic institutions or top industrial establishments in the country and abroad. At the desktop of achievements of the department,lies the award of accreditation.The department also has iso 9002 certification(1994) the scope of which covers the Undergraduate course in Computer Science and Engineering and Continuing Education Program(CEEP). The Department of Mechanical Engineering has been the heart and spirit of this premier institution right from its inception.Rated very high,today,this department is the alma mater of several technocrats and researchers in India and abroad.The department offers courses in Mechanical Engineering and industrial engineering Department Of Business Administration The College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram is the pioneering management institution in Kerala University. The MBA program was started in 1985 as a part time program to cater to the needs of managers and supervisors longing for assimilation and translation of professional management. This program has been well received by the practicing management fraternity and continues to be in the forefront. A department of the current status was started in 2000 with a full time MBA program. Department Of Architecture The department as it stands today is one of the foremost schools of Architecture in India. Still going strong and as par with the premier institutions of the country. It has the prerogative to boast of students who gave honed their scientific and practical knowledge with as much skill as their artistic talent COURSE CURRICULAM: A very imaginative and meticulously planned curriculum so designed as to bring out the best in each individual. From 2003 onwards the undergraduate program is switched over to semester scheme from the existing annual exam scheme Department of Computer Applications The Department of Computer Applications was started in the year 1986 under the initiative of the Department of Electronics, Government of India. The department offers three-year full-time MCA program, which focuses on providing sound theoretical background as well as a good practical exposure to the students in the relevant areas. The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering is one of the oldest departments of the college. It has grown into one of the best in South India. The department provides good quality education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels Department of Physical Education The department in a span of 62 years has established itself as a reputed and recognized department in the institute. The department offers various training programmes in sports and games to all students and staff in the institute. It is worth mentioning that the department is the first one to propose a fitness center in which a large number of students and teachers have benefited. |
